The curriculum

The children are assessed on the ABLLS (Assessment of Basic Language and Learner Skills) within the first two weeks of their VB programme, and this assessment is used to form the basis of their individual curriculum. We also follow the Foundation Stage curriculum in the Nursery and VB1, and some aspects of the National Curriculum if it is appropriate and suitable in the other VB classes. Each child's programme is written individually to suit their needs.

ABA VB

The main focus of each child's programme is to develop functional language and communication skills. Children are taught to use vocalisations (speech) which may be supported and encouraged through the use of sign language. Other areas of the curriculum include play skills, group activities and self-help skills.
