English

Language provides the main instruments of learning throughout the school curriculum. It is essential to most human activities and is the chief means by which we communicate with other people. Our aim is to nurture and develop the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening throughout the school by providing a rich environment, which enables a child to develop as an individual. Language is the key to the acquisition of new ideas and information, to the broadening of experience and to the interpretation of the world in which we live. We seek to provide a wide range of teaching and learning strategies, adapted to meet pupils' individual needs.

The National Curriculum statement on inclusion identifies three essential principles:

We attempt to apply these principles to enable every pupil to experience success in learning.

English is a core subject in the National Curriculum. The fundamental skills concepts of the subject are set out in the National Literacy Framework, which provides the basic structure for our school policy. In accordance with guidance given in the National Curriculum, knowledge, skills and understanding may be taught from earlier key stages so that individual pupils can make progress.

The general approach to teaching English will be multi-sensory to maximise the learning potential of our pupils and take into account differing learning styles and abilities.
