Mr L Tomlinson - Teacher, Geography Dept.
At Treetops all pupils do curriculum courses in Geography, where we try to make the subject fun, exciting and educational. We have a practical hands-on approach where we make everything as realistic and as child centred as possible. We include as many videos and images of the work as we can. A most important aspect is the Geography Field trip, where we take the pupils out of the classroom and carry out tasks and activities related to climate, geomorphology, human aspects and map work. These can include educational trips to the beach at Southend, Mersea Island and the Thames River. We also combine with history trips to London and to Duxford. We try at all times to integrate the geography we do, with the History, cooking, CDT, PSHE and other lessons at school. Pupils are also given tasks or projects over their vacations. We encourage the pupils to take pictures on holiday in foreign or local places, so that we have our own Holiday Web Gallery, for the whole school to enjoy.
Pupils have access to a wide range of technology from remote weather stations, digital thermometers, anemometers, rain gauges, computers, interactive CDs, Interactive White Boards, Web cams and weather stations, digital cameras, camcorders, videos challenges. As usual we also utilise both the Geography and school libraries where there is more than enough information for the pupils to access. Our pupils are encouraged to work independently with any aspect that can enhance the subject, and we do encourage internet, television and written press research on a weekly basis.
The pupils follow all the Key Stage curriculum overviews as set out on the QCA websites, so we will not bore you with them here.
