It is the aim of all teachers and technical support staff who deliver this subject with great passion, to impart high standards of hygiene and safety practices, whilst educating students to explore and produce healthy food products, transferring skills and knowledge to successfully inform and influence students to make enjoyable nutritious choices.
Summary of curriculum for Key Stage 3
The Food Technology Dept support the proposals to develop and implement the new initiative ‘Licence to Cook’ programme of studies to be incorporated into our existing schemes of work for Key Stage 3. We value the links for our students to take part in the wider sharing of skills and knowledge which can be accessed online with recognised progressive assessments and valuable interactive teaching models. We are committed to the inclusion of ‘Licence to Cook’ having undertaken training for our members. Each year has eighteen lessons which are primarily practical.
Our existing scheme outlined below aims to entice our students natural curiosity and enthusiasm, challenging them to prepare familiar home made products under skilled guidance and practical support, introducing healthy options and reinforcing their five a day portions and allowing students to make informed choices given the nutritional information and examples of products.
Summary of syllabus for Key Stage 4 (Welsh Board of Exams)
It is our collective ethos in Key Stage 4 to make a life long impression on students as to the importance of having knowledge of food and nutrition, and how food choices will make an impact on their health and well being, now and in the future; to impress the value of learning important skills which empower and promote independence; to acknowledge and question our food sources; to understand, promote and be inspired by the enrichment of our global culinary influences; to inform and create an awareness of the dietary needs of others, acknowledging the diversity of different groups for medical, social, cultural or religious reasons; and last but not least, to facilitate the very important and fundamental human need to socialise, and as a team we are proactive in teaching students to learn to prepare, cook, eat, share and interact with each other with respect.
