History at Treetops

Mr L Tomlinson

Mr L Tomlinson - Teacher, History Dept.

At Treetops all pupils do curriculum courses in History, where we try to make the subject adventurous, fun, exciting and educational. We have a practical hands-on approach where we make everything as realistic and as child centred as possible. We include as many videos and images of the work as we can. A most important aspect is the History Field trip, where we take the pupils out of the classroom and carry out tasks and activities related to all the history aspects we cover. These can include educational trips to the Imperial War Museum in London and Duxford, the Tower of London, as well as educational visits to the local museums in Grays, Tilbury and Colchester. We also take part in the Annual remembrance day celebrations .We try at all times to integrate the history we do, with the Geography, cooking, CDT, PSHE and other lessons at school. Pupils are also given tasks or projects over their vacations. We encourage the pupils to take pictures of historic significance on holiday in foreign or local places, so that we have our own Holiday History Web Gallery, for the whole school to enjoy.

Pupils have access to a wide range of technology, computers, interactive CDs ,Interactive White Boards, Web cams and, digital cameras , camcorders, videos challenges from which they can develop their historic knowledge. As usual we also utilise both the history and school libraries where there is more than enough information for the pupils to access. Our pupils are encouraged to work independently with any aspect that can enhance the subject, and we do encourage internet, television and written press research on a weekly basis.

The pupils follow all the Key Stage curriculum overviews as set out on the QCA websites, so see them there.
