Homework Policy

The school affirms that homework is an integral part of the curriculum and supports children’s learning during all key stages. The School sees the purpose of homework as being:

• To develop opportunities for parents, carers and children to work together and enjoy shared learning experiences.
• To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding, particularly in numeracy and literacy.
• To extend school learning by extending opportunities outside the school environment e.g. additional reading.
• To exploit learning resources outside the school e.g. in the local area or in the home.
• For pupils to develop, as they get older, the confidence and self-discipline to study on their own.
• For pupils to develop the ability to manage time in order to complete independent tasks.
• To encourage enquiry and interest in extending their knowledge, skills and aptitudes beyond the school curriculum.

Type and amount of homework

This will vary depending on the age and ability of the pupil but will always have an emphasis on numeracy and literacy. Tasks will reflect the ability of the pupils and provide opportunities for them to gain success. The government makes recommendations for the amount of homework that should be given. This school feels the following allocations are best suited to the children.

Key Stage 1

Pupils will receive an average of 1hr per week, taking the form of shared reading, spellings, other literacy work and numeracy work.

Key Stage 2

Pupils will receive an average of 1hr 30 mins. per week. This again will take the form of shared reading, spellings, numeracy and literacy work, but now with occasional assignments from other areas of the curriculum.
