The Backstage Centre welcomes Treetops School in Grays to explore careers in the creative industries.

Director, Brian Warrens FRSA, visited the amazing Treetops School in Grays, Essex as part of a Careers Event to highlight and experience some of the work and career opportunities that exist in the creative industries.

In the first of three visits, students explored with Brian a range of careers from carpenters to riggers, from lighting design to expert skills such as animation. Following an exciting revelation that the students were very interested in finding out more about animation, Brian returned for a second visit where students learned about stop-motion animation and with the assistance of some Lego, created amazing stop-motion content.

The students were then invited to attend a third experience, this time at the award-winning production building, The Backstage Centre, in Purfleet-on-Thames. Here students were given a tour of the Soundstage and were invited to take part in a workshop activity and see a screening of the film content they made.

Brian told the visitors the “…the creative industries is a home to diverse needs and provides career opportunities across the many disciplines in exciting careers such as Games Development, Animation, and the exciting world of Visual Effects.”

Quote from Lauren Edmunds – Balfour Beatty working on Lower Thames Crossing Project

"I have recently been working with Treetops as an Enterprise Advisor, I took on this role as I am passionate about supporting the next generation with careers advice. It has been a total pleasure to work with Lucy & Traci over the past year, the work they deliver in the careers space is incredible and they go above and beyond to tailor this area of work to each of the students individual needs. I was so surprised to see how many different areas of vocational subjects are delivered for the students, to truly equip them with key skills they need that will support them when they leave school. When engaging with the students at numerous events throughout the past year, I have been overwhelmed with their enthusiasm when delivering careers sessions. It has been a great opportunity to highlight the vast amount of careers that we have in the construction industry that they may not have been aware of and to be able to share future opportunities with the students that will be available on the Lower Thames Crossing project. I am excited to continue to work with Treetops and the students to support their careers education program over the next academic year."

Quote from Siobhan Carslake - Recruitment Project Manager, Care UK

"It has been a privilege to have introduced Treetops Students to careers in Care and support with valuable employability skills for their future.

The students seemed really engaged with the content and the visit to Mountfitchet House care home in Stansted, Essex. They were thrilled when they discovered how there is roles colleagues at Care UK do that relate really well to their studies and their own personal skills and enjoyed learning and discussing how these could be transferable to a job one day.

I personally was impressed by some students ability to absorb and remember information they had learnt about Care UK and detail of the roles they learnt about in their visit. It was also very rewarding and impactful seeing them reflect on their own strengths and watch their confidence and mindset grow as a result of the workshops we delivered such as the ‘what is great about you’ session.

We value the opportunity to support and look forward to continue our relationship with Treetops in the coming years."

The students were highly engaged, asking numerous questions throughout the day. These opportunities to introduce our industry to younger generations are invaluable in inspiring them to explore the world of work. Quote from Ellie Lambert - Head of Education Partnerships

"Speakers for Schools worked alongside Treetops to deliver the Future Freedom SEND Project, funded by Greater Essex Careers Hub. This project matched both Treetops School and Treetops Free School with an employer who delivered a series of employer encounters designed to give students insights into, and experience of, the world of work.

Treetops School was matched with Care UK and students had the opportunity to visit Mountfitchet House Care Home for a workplace tour and to see the range of career roles on offer and interact with staff.

Treetops Free School was matched with The Backstage Centre and had the opportunity to visit the centre for a workplace tour and to learn about film, lighting, animation and special effects.

It was a pleasure to partner with Treetops in this project and give their students these valuable experiences. Both staff and students were responsive, passionate and positive throughout."
